 NEW Liquid Cardiac Control

The new liquid cardiac control from the Randox Acusera range contains assayed  target values and ranges for an impressive 10 cardiac markers.

The inclusion of parameters such as D-dimer, BNP and Homocysteine
in a single control material allows for effective consolidation and flexibility.

The Randox Liquid Cardiac Control provides the following benefits.

• Liquid stable ready-to-use makes it suitable for
use in the clinical laboratory and at the point of care

• Little training required as no reconstitution/dilution is needed, saving time and costs

• Storage at +2 - 8°C means the control can be
assessed immediately without the need to thaw before use

• Three levels available in flexible pack sizes
(3 x 1ml or 3 x 3ml)

• 100% human control and true third party, suitable
for use on a wide range of analysers

BNP  • NTProBNP  • D-dimer  • Homocysteine • Troponin I • Troponin T
Digoxin • CK-MB • hsCRP  • Myoglobin

High Sensitivity Troponin T Control

The New Acusera High Sensitivity Troponin T
is a dedicated control designed to monitor the
performance of high sensitivity Troponin T assays.

As an assayed control it allows for the routine
assessment of both precision and accuracy.

      •
Lyophilised for enhanced stability

• 100% human serum

• Ultra low Troponin T levels around
   0.0165 ng/ml (16.5 ng/l)

• Stable to expiry at +2 - +8°C

• Reconstituted stability of 5 days at
  +2 - +8°C or 4 weeks at -20°C

The importance of 100% human QC

There is a wide choice of Quality Control (QC) material currently on the market but the question is:

How do you know what material to trust?

The ideal quality control sera should be identical to the patient sample undergoing analysis to avoid matrix effects and accurately assess performance. Unfortunately this is not always the case.

In an attempt to reduce manufacturing costs and remain competitive many quality control manufacturers add constituents of animal origin to their control products. At best these controls can be described as “human based”.

The use of 100% human controls is vital for any assay using antibody based reagents such as immunoassay and immunological methods.

The use of human based controls or non human controls can cause significant problems due to differences in antibody specificity towards the non human components.

Perhaps the most commonly reported issue resulting from the use of human based controls is a significant shift in QC values upon changing batch

of reagent, in some instances control values can shift up to 50% from the original target value. This is not only frustrating for laboratories but results in them constantly having to reassign their control values, this process not only takes time but can have serious cost implications due to wastage of both reagents and quality controls.

Randox supply a wide range of 100% human controls ensuring consistent results every time:

  • Immunoassay
  • Maternal Screening
  • Tumour Markers
  • Immunology/Proteins
  • Drugs of Abuse
  • Therapeutic Drug
     Monitoring
  • CSF
  • Lipids
  • Cardiac

Fully human controls free from interfering preservatives and non human components provide a sample matrix identical to that of the patient sample increasing your confidence that QC performance mirrors that of patient samples.

The human based material used in the production of our Quality Controls is sourced from the United Kingdom Blood Transfusion Service. All donors are screened for HIV, Hepatitis A, B, C, HTLV and Syphilis, using immunoassay techniques to detect antibodies and specific DNA tests to detect any viruses even at early stages of infection.

This view to safety and quality is the trademark of Randox control manufacture. The integrity of our base materials is a critical factor in producing highly stable and consistent controls.

In order to improve accuracy, reliability and overall patient diagnosis answer the question:

Do you truly know what is in your quality control material?

Randox employees take on Mount Kilimanjaro

On 10th October 2010, five Randox employees reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. The complete group consisted of ten individuals in total, called the ‘Fighting Chance’ group. They were raising much needed money for the Children’s Heartbeat Trust in Northern Ireland, an exclusive Northern Irish charity which works alongside the Clarke Clinic at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. This charity work to provide funding to assist parents of young children diagnosed with a range of heart conditions.

This was no easy challenge, with Mount Kilimanjaro standing at 5895m (19, 300ft), making it the highest freestanding mountain in the world. It took the team six days to reach the summit with temperatures varying from +30°C during the day, right down to -20°C during the night. The team walked up to, and over, seven hours per day to reach their goal. When they had reached the summit, the team proudly displayed the Randox logo at the highest point on the African continent!

The climb was entirely self-funded so all the money raised will go directly to the charity. The team greatly
appreciate all the support they have received.

Donations can still be made at http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/FightingChance. Money raised will go a long way to provide critical care in the Clarke Clinic, changing many people’s lives for the better.

In the News  How a bad night's sleep raises risk of diabetes…

A bad night's sleep may not just leave you tired and irritable. It could also raise your risk of diabetes, research suggests.

Just one night of tossing and turning and getting only four hours' sleep can 'profoundly' affect the body's ability to use insulin to convert sugar into energy. Disruption of this delicate process can lead to diabetes. Complications arising from the condition include heart disease, blindness and amputations. With a soaring number of Britons developing diabetes - from 1.26million cases in 1996 to 2.35million today - the findings suggest sleepless nights caused by the stresses of modern life are at least partly to blame.

To make the link, Dutch scientists looked at how effective the bodies of nine healthy volunteers were at processing sugar. They were examined twice - once after a night of eight hours' sleep and once after grabbing just four hours. Halving the amount of sleep reduced the body's ability to use insulin to process sugar - known as insulin sensitivity - by up to a quarter, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism reports.

Previous research has found that several nights of poor sleep can send sugar levels haywire, but this study is the first to show that even one bad night - caused by a busy day at the office or a sick child - can be detrimental to health.
